OpenAI Files for IPO, Meta Puts AI in Every Customer Chat, and Google's AI Summaries Are Eating Your Search Traffic

Big week. OpenAI filed IPO paperwork. Meta pushed an AI agent to every WhatsApp Business and Instagram account on the planet. And new data put a number on something most business owners have already been noticing: Google's AI search summaries are pulling customers away before they ever click through to your site.

AI Phone Answering Is Now Within Reach for Small Service Businesses

Research tracking more than 130,000 inbound calls to small service businesses found that 74 percent went unanswered, costing the average contractor an estimated $189,000 in lost revenue per year. AI voice agents that answer calls, gather job details, and book appointments automatically now cost between $50 and $300 per month for most small businesses, with no technical setup required.

What this means for your business: For HVAC companies, plumbers, electricians, and other service businesses, the customer who calls when something breaks goes with whoever picks up first. An AI receptionist is not just for companies with IT departments anymore. Tools built for small service businesses connect directly to your scheduling system and handle new job requests around the clock. If you are regularly missing calls and losing work to faster competitors, this is one of the most measurable uses of AI available right now.

Meta Brings an AI Customer Service Agent to WhatsApp and Instagram

Meta launched its Meta Business Agent globally on June 3, making it available to any business using WhatsApp Business or Instagram. The agent answers customer questions, books appointments, qualifies leads, and hands off to a human when needed. No one at your business has to do anything. More than a million businesses were already running an early version before launch.

What this means for your business: If customers already message you on WhatsApp or Instagram, this is worth a look now. A property manager or home service company could use it to handle after-hours inquiries automatically. Pricing is usage-based, so businesses with moderate volume may find the cost workable. The catch: your competitors have the same access, and customers will increasingly expect faster responses whether you have AI set up or not.

ChatGPT Gets a Memory Upgrade That Learns Your Preferences Over Time

OpenAI rolled out a new memory system called "Dreaming V3" on June 4 for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. Instead of you telling ChatGPT what to remember, the system builds a profile of your preferences, past projects, and business context on its own. Free-tier users will get access soon. OpenAI says factual recall jumped from 41 percent in 2024 to 83 percent today.

What this means for your business: If you use ChatGPT to draft emails, write proposals, or handle customer communications, this should make it noticeably more useful without any extra work. It will learn your business name, writing style, and recurring task types without you having to re-explain them every session. You can view, edit, or delete anything it stores, which matters if certain client details should stay out of the system.

OpenAI Files Quietly for an IPO

OpenAI confirmed on June 8 that it filed a confidential S-1 with the SEC, the first formal step toward going public. The company said it has not decided on timing. Reports put the valuation somewhere between $730 billion and $850 billion, with annualized revenue above $25 billion, though the company is still spending more than it earns. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, is also heading toward a public offering.

What this means for your business: Once OpenAI answers to shareholders, pricing pressure follows. The current rates on ChatGPT and similar tools are not going to hold forever. If you have been waiting to build AI into your workflow, it is cheaper to start now than in two or three years. The tools are also the best they have ever been.

Google's AI Summaries Are Cutting Traffic to Local Business Websites

Google's AI Overviews now appear in roughly 25 percent of all U.S. searches. When the summary answers the question on the results page, many users never scroll down to the map pack or click through to a website at all. Zero-click searches jumped from 56 percent to 69 percent between 2024 and 2025. One study found 32 percent fewer local businesses appearing in AI-generated results compared to the old map pack.

What this means for your business: If you run a plumbing company, dental practice, HVAC business, or any service that depends on Google, this is already hitting your traffic. Businesses cited in AI Overviews still get visibility. Those that are not cited disappear from those searches entirely. Google decides who gets cited based on the quality of information on your site and Google Business Profile, not just your star rating. Current hours, a listed service area, and plain-language answers to common customer questions are the most direct fixes available right now.

Apple Rebuilt Siri from the Ground Up with Google's AI

Apple announced at WWDC on June 8 that it is replacing the old Siri with a new conversational assistant called Siri AI, built on a custom version of Google's Gemini model under a multi-year deal. The new version holds back-and-forth conversations, remembers context within a session, helps draft messages and emails, and takes actions across apps on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It rolls out with iOS 27 this fall.

What this means for your business: Most field crews and small offices run on iPhones. When iOS 27 arrives, the phone in your team's pocket gets significantly more useful. Think: drafting a customer reply while driving between jobs, pulling up an address by voice, setting reminders without touching the screen. Nothing to do right now, but when the update hits this fall it is worth a few minutes to show your team what it can actually do.

AI-Generated Resumes Are Making It Harder to Find Good Hires

A Robert Half survey of more than 250 U.S. small business leaders found that 54 percent say AI-generated job applications have made hiring harder. While 76 percent feel confident about their overall outlook, 47 percent say finding skilled talent is more difficult than a year ago, and only 12 percent say they have the people needed to finish their most important work.

What this means for your business: More applicants, less signal. Whether you are hiring a dental receptionist, a plumber's helper, or an office manager, expect polished resumes that tell you almost nothing. Add one task-based screening question to your job post that needs a personal, specific answer. Something like: "Describe how you handled a difficult customer situation." A real answer, even a slightly rough one, stands out from an AI-written one immediately.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI heading to Wall Street is a signal. When the company that made this whole thing go answers to shareholders, pricing will follow. The tools are the best and cheapest they have ever been. That combination will not last.

The most actionable thing you can do this week: log into your Google Business Profile, make sure everything is current, and fill in any missing service details or hours. It takes 20 minutes and directly affects whether Google's AI sends customers your way or to someone else.
